Book Review: The Storied Life of A J Fikry

I'll say it : I loveloveloved this novel.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin was just such a warm, wonderful read.

Fikry is the prickly owner of Island Books, a small and independent bookstore on Alice Island. Though opinionated and not always likeable, Fikry finds his world turned on his axis by three events - a baby, a stolen book and a charming book rep.

I started this novel in the morning and finished it that evening - I couldn't put it down. The writing just flowed and flowed, the plot kept me so engrossed, and the characters were so flawed and interesting, and yet completely endearing. I didn't want it to end.

The setting of the bookshop and Fikry's clear love of novels felt like such a love letter to anyone who loves - and works with - books of any kind. The romance was sweet, the family connections sweeter, and the ending...well, you'll have to read it and tell me what you thought.

I can't recommend this enough - definitely a contender for favorite book of the year (at least, so far)!
