Book Review: The Stuff That Never Happened

The Stuff That Never Happened by Maddie Dawson

Nat recommended this book to me, and like her, I had mixed feeling about it - it started off slow, it got really good in the middle, but one character was too stereotypical and the ending too tidy.

In a nutshell, this is the story - told in in present-day 2005 and the past of the 1970s - of a marriage between Annabelle and Grant, and the affair Annabelle had shortly after they were married, and how it has had a ripple effect through their lives since then.

But it's written in such a way, you start to wonder if you are rooting for the wrong guy...

This was a fairly easy read, though as I said, a bit slow to start, and a bit tidy to finish, but I'm glad I read it!

Hi, Marissa--I wanted to thank you for reviewing my book on your blog and for your kind words. I loved the part about how the book makes you start to wonder if you are rooting for the wrong guy. I think what I was realizing as I was writing the book was that with marriages--especially long ones--there are always factors that other people can't know. Sorry the beginning part was slow for you. I really was trying to set up Annabelle's past family life in a way that would help the reader understand, later, why she would resort to an affair. I didn't want the reader to simply think she was acting without any provocation! It's always so much fun to read the impressions others take away from a book, even if they're not 100% positive. So thank you for taking the time to read it and comment on it and even to think further about these characters. All best wishes, Maddie
